Tow hooks or straps are probably the last item on your modification list unless you’re a scenester and want those 3-extra horsepower at the stance nation Krispy Kreme event. But for us track focused guys this is not only a requirement but a good safety precaution. If you spin out at the track and need to be towed, you have two options: have the tow truck rip your front end off grabbing onto your control arms or being pulled out gently by a stout tow strap.
For years I was using the stock tow hook found in the BMW tool kit for my E30 track car. Although it works as described, the tow hook is ugly, and obtrusive, sticking about 5 inches out from the front of the car. If you’re racing bumper to bumper this may upset the guy in front of you when he has a puncture in the back of his car at the end of the race.
When scouring the internet for a low-profile tow strap that fit the BMW thread pitch for the OEM location, my results were fairly lackluster. Most towing devices had poor reviews and were more for show than actual track use. Many were made from cheap Chinese steel, not giving me much confidence of being towed safely back on the track. With a void to be filled, I reached out to Carlos at Condor Speed Shop, and placed a little birdie in his ear. I would like to say this tow strap was developed because of me, but who knows, this may have been in the works for a while.
Fast forward 10 months and Condor Speed Shop introduced their low-profile racing tow strap. Filled with glee, I quickly purchased the strap for testing. Immediate reaction to holding the strap was quality, lots of quality. The threaded portion of the strap starts out with a block of stainless steel that is CNC’d into a low-profile stud that fits perfectly into the threaded portion of your BMW. The strap is made from a bright red, heavy duty, nylon webbing similar to a seatbelt. The addition of red threaded cross stitching adds to the strength and rigidity to the product. The overall design is absolutely stunning, while sitting tight and flush against the body of the car until you need it (hopefully never).
All in all, I am very impressed with this product and glad I purchased it. I think Condor Speed Shop did a great job of solving a simple solution. Because of all this greatness, it does run at a price above its cheap Chinese competitors. Is a $100 tow strap too much? I always say, “you can’t put a price on safety.” In the end its more than I think anyone would want to pay for a tow strap, but the quality and design quickly outweigh the premium for this product. I don’t think you will be disappointed one bit.
